Back in late 2011 and early 2012, I was considering quitting gaming for an extended period of time due to the general lack of upcoming games I thought were worthy of my time. Thoughts on E3 2011

Once every year, gamers from around the world huddle in front of their home/works computers eagerly awaiting the slew of announcements from the industry. It’s a time to see the most cutting edge graphics, the latest gaming experiences and largest number of titles. While E3 has always had an issue of hyping and misrepresenting titles, the thing that struck me the most this year is how overwhelmed each game was at showing some sort of spectacle. (more…)

The Dig (1995)

Most SCUMM era adventure games start off with a high concept, a general idea of what the setting and story is going to be, and then work from there. The specifics of the jokes, puzzles and narrative details are often unrelated to one another. The mechanics of the puzzles and the layout of the various areas often have to do with gameplay while the story is told around those gameplay elements. The brilliance of The Dig is that the world informs the approach to the gameplay, creating a fantastic synthesis of gameplay and story. (more…)

Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge (1991)

After tasting the succulence that is The Secret of Monkey Island, savoring of its sweet adventure gaming goodness and sighing with a great sense of satisfaction upon completion, the turn comes. Like the late night after a fantastic Mexican dinner, a great disturbance in the force; There is another: Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge or, as I like to call it, revenge of the beef fajitas, refried beans and fried rice. Escape from Butcher Bay (2004)

Note: This is a review of the Assault on Dark Athena version of Escape from Butcher Bay which features a few gameplay tweaks and an annoying extra layer of graphical shininess.

I am the shadow in the night, the phantom that haunts your dreams, that which the darkness fears. As I slowly descent down the flight of stairs, screwdriver in hand, I anticipate the kill, see the prey, prepare for the lunge. I step into the light and as I prepare for that moment, that blissful moment of ecstasy, the prey turns around. (more…)

Just Cause 2 (2010)

At its finest moments, Just Cause 2 is pure, unadulterated fun. As you effortlessly grapple from tree to tree, raining down bullets on your enemies and dropping grenade amid highly combustible fuel tanks you’ll find yourself hooked upon the simple, but well-polished acts of destruction. It’s a pyrotechnics dream as your mission is simple: blow up as much of the island as you can. (more…)

Assassin’s Creed (2008)

For all the freedoms Assassin’s Creed touts, it comes with too many caveats. You can go anywhere, although certain areas will be blocked off until you do specific tasks. As for doing anything, what you can do is narrowly limited, the overall experience is practically linear with the only real choice being in what order you take missions. In a game about being free to choose how I go about my missions every time I try to do it my way a wall impedes me from making my “free” choice. (more…)
